Film Screening with Keynote and Panel Discussion: “The Garbage Helicopter” (Sweden, 2015)

10. Juni @ 19:00 - 21:30

For the final evening of the film series “I Spy with My Little Eye… Antigypsyism in Film”, the Swedish Embassy in Berlin in cooperation with the Critical Film & Image Hub at the Research Center on Antigypsyism (Heidelberg University) and the Protestant Academy Berlin have selected an outstanding work: the Swedish road movie “The Garbage Helicopter” (2015) by Jonas Selberg Augustsén.

Three Roma siblings travel across Sweden to return an old wall clock to their grandmother. Along the way, they encounter strange situations, unusual places, and moments of quiet absurdity. Beneath its seemingly simple premise, the film unfolds as a poetic and subtle reflection on family, belonging, and everyday experiences beyond stereotypes.

REGISTRATION REQUIRED HERE

The evening will open with a keynote by Dr. Radmila Mladenova (Critical Film & Image Hub, Research Center on Antigypsyism, Heidelberg University), introducing the film’s themes.

Keynote: On the Aesthetics of Self-Reflexivity in “The Garbage Helicopter”

Following the screening, Dr. Mladenova will be joined in discussion by Angelina Dimiter-Taikon, activist and actress in the film, and Mikael Demetri, film consultant. Together, they will reflect on the film’s production, the representation of Roma identities, and the broader social questions it raises.

With this special event, we conclude this year’s film series and invite you to join us for an evening of cinema, reflection, and conversation on identity, family, and the absurdities of everyday life.
